Incentive for educators
Childcare is a dynamic and vitally important sector that needs high quality employees at all levels. Those working in this field play a crucial role in shaping the lives of future generations. A career in childcare is rewarding and profoundly important.
The Rio Tinto Community Fund is offering incentives for individuals seeking a career in childcare and for existing educators wishing to further their qualifications. The aim of this investment is to attract new educators to the industry to help meet current and future demand, as well as to help improve overall quality of care by supporting existing educators to up-skill.
It is important that before you seek a career in childcare you understand what educators might expect in a work day:
- Encouraging children to develop social skills and discover more about the world
- Helping children to develop number and language skills through a wide variety of activities
- Feeding, bathing and dressing babies, changing nappies and preparing bottles or baby food
- Nurturing children’s natural curiosity
- Taking care of children’s personal needs
- Ensuring appropriate health and safety and child protection requirements are met
- Building relationships with parents and other family to support their child’s development
- Observing and assessing children and producing brief written reports
- Consulting and attending meetings with other professionals.

Incentive for educators
The childcare industry in the Gladstone region is currently experiencing great pressure to recruit and retain childcare educators. To help ease that pressure, the incentive for educators programme specifically targets the recruitment of new educators in the industry and the retention of existing educators.
New educators: The childcare centre and new educator will each be offered $2,000 to help meet the financial costs to complete the Certificate III in Children’s Services within a 24 month period whilst working a minimum of 20 hours at a childcare centre in Gladstone.
Existing educators: The childcare centre and existing educator will each be offered $2,000 to help meet the financial costs to complete of the Diploma of Children Services within a 36 month period whilst working a minimum of 20 hours at a Childcare centre in Gladstone.
Each commercial operator who is registered in the Here for Childcare programme will be entitled to one new educator incentive and one existing educator incentive each year for three years (2012-2015), totalling six incentive payments over the three year funding term.
What are the qualifications?
Certificate III in Children’s Services: This qualification covers educators who use organisation policies, procedures and individual children’s profiles to plan activities and provide care to children, facilitating their leisure and play, and enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes. Depending on the setting, educators may work under direct supervision or autonomously. This programme can be completed as part of a traineeship.
Diploma of Children’s Services: This qualification covers educators in children’s services responsible for planning, implementing and managing programmes in early childhood services (0-5 years) in accordance with licensing, accreditation and duty of care requirements.
